Runners-up

Pioneering the hybrid car movement, the Toyota Prius family has quieted the naysayers and remains popular in both the new and used market. With several different models, Prius is a perennial Best Retained Value Award winner. For 2018, Prius c has taken the top spot for the second year in a row. This 4 door Hybrid hatchback has a surprisingly large interior for this segment. It also has a good amount of space for cargo with the seats up or down. The ride is firm but wouldn’t be classified as sporty. As expected and the main reason for buying a hybrid vehicle, fuel economy is excellent. If you are looking for a fuel efficient and reliable used car, you won’t go wrong choosing the Toyota Prius c, a Canadian Black Book 2018 Best Retained Value Award winner.

2018 Best Retained Value - Compact Car

Toyota Prius v

Another Prius enters the winners circle as Canadians continue to embrace hybrid vehicles in the used market. Enjoying the excellent fuel economy of a hybrid, the Prius v adds the utility of a station wagon. With more cargo room than some SUVs, this is the perfect answer for economy conscious families. With a spacious interior and quiet cabin, the drive is comfortable for the driver and passengers. Achieving its impressive fuel economy requires a light foot, but there isn’t much about the Prius v which inspires one to drive it hard. Canadians appreciate good value and the value in the Prius v as a used vehicle makes it a Canadian Black Book 2018 Best Retained Value Award winner.

2018 Best Retained Value - Mid-size Car

2018 Best Retained Value - Full-size Car

Toyota Avalon*

While it may not set hearts racing with handling prowess or dramatic performance, that is missing the point. The Avalon is spacious, quiet, and comes with that Toyota trademark quality. The 2013 model year introduced a dramatic new look and increased luxury with more upscale features and improved materials. Although we say that it may not be the vehicle of choice for a day at the race track, the ride was tightened from the soft, disconnected feel of previous years. The Avalon is definitely one to consider if you want a comfortable, roomy sedan that is proven to hold its value over time.

2018 Best Retained Value - Entry Luxury Car

Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class

The CLA was introduced for the 2014 model year and in its first year of eligibility for a Canadian Black Book Best Retained Value Award, the CLA has taken the Entry Luxury Car segment. Its stylish good looks reflect the swooping lines of a coupe in a four-door package. With a base 4-cylinder engine, the CLA isn’t a rocket, but does deliver plenty of power for this entry level Mercedes-Benz. As expected with any Mercedes, the interior is a comfortable place to be with excellent fit and finish and plenty of room. For those seeking a great entry into luxury car ownership, the Mercedes-Benz CLA is a great place to start.

2018 Best Retained Value - Luxury Car

Lexus GS*

For the 2014 model year, the Lexus GS made some significant changes. Adding an 8-speed automatic transmission to replace the 6-speed helped improve the fuel economy in the rear wheel drive models. The base engine is a 306 hp V6 while the hybrid version generated a combined 338 hp. As expected in a Lexus, the interior is comfortable and well appointed. Space is not exceptional for a mid-sized sedan primarily due to its rear drive configuration that requires a large central tunnel. The GS is a true performance sedan with driving dynamics that are not generally associated with Lexus. So if you are looking for a luxury sports sedan with the legendary quality of Lexus, the GS continues to deliver.

2018 Best Retained Value - Premium Luxury Car

Porsche Panamera*

Aping the Porsche 911’s trademark silhouette, the Panamera evokes the lines of a sports car while bringing rear seat passengers along for the (fast) ride, in comfort. When Porsche set out to make a large luxury sedan they, perhaps wisely, elected not to follow the so-called three-box styling formula normally used in this segment. The three-box style, one for the engine, one for the cabin, and one for the trunk is eschewed for a sweeping fastback profile with a rear hatch. While it may look different from the competition, it follows the recipe for luxury inside with lashings of leather and features galore. While luxurious, differences from the luxury norm don’t end there, its mission leans more to the performance side of things, in keeping with the Porsche name. It delivers on the promise, with most engines it leaves little to be desired in the performance department and handling is there to match. Often it pays to be unique, it helps keep values strong and win awards like this one, the Porsche crest on the front doesn’t hurt either.

2018 Best Retained Value - Sports Car

Dodge Challenger*

A winner for the seventh straight year, the Challenger proves the retro styling formula is still a winner for sports car buyers, new and used alike. The Challenger keeps putting together wins year-after-year by offering a stylish package with engines ranging from quick, to fast, to bonkers. Entry level models have a V6 that is quick, with enough performance for day-to-day driving. The R/T gets treated to the venerable 5.7L V8 Hemi, with enough power to get you hauled in by the local constabulary. The bonkers option is the SRT version of the Challenger, equipped with a face-warping 6.4L V8, it truly has what it takes to create lots of smiles per mile and smoky burn-outs too. The entire line-up is one that buyers are looking to get a hold of, keeping used prices high and pushing it to win the Canadian Black Book 2018 Best Retained Value Award.

2018 Best Retained Value - Premium Sports Car

Chevrolet Corvette

For the 2014 model year, Chevrolet introduced the C7 and attracted a whole new generation of Corvette enthusiasts. The seventh generation Corvette was a leap forward, with increased power, improved driving dynamics, better fit and finish and technology never before seen on America’s sports car icon. More comfort and technology added some weight, but more horsepower and an almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution means the 2014 Corvette performs better than ever before. The introduction of the C7 was a big hit in 2014 that continues to attract high demand in the used car market and a retained value that earns a Canadian Black Book Best Retained Value award for 2018.

2018 Best Retained Value - Compact SUV

Jeep Wrangler*

For the 8th year in a row, Wrangler won the Compact SUV category. Last year Wrangler set a new retained value record of 82% and for 2018 it beat it at 91% retained value after four years. The demand for Wrangler continues to grow, both new and used but finding a good used Wrangler is like finding the proverbial needle in the haystack. With its iconic styling and go-anywhere capability, Wrangler appeals to buyers who want a fun-to-drive, versatile machine that will make school runs and traverse mountain passes with equal success.

2018 Best Retained Value - Mid-size Crossover/SUV

Toyota FJ Cruiser*

In a segment that was swept by Toyota, FJ Cruiser once again owns the top spot in 2018 with 86% retained value. While its off-road capabilities are not likely to be tested by most drivers, the iconic looks let everyone know it means business. With polarizing looks that are not for everyone, FJ does have a loyal following that place a high demand on the limited number available. Those who do buy into the club get the previously mentioned stout off-road capability and they are also getting tried and tested Toyota quality. All-said, this is a tough mudder that keeps it together for long-haul and so it is back for another Best Retained Value Award.

2018 Best Retained Value - Compact Luxury Crossover/SUV

Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class*

One of the most popular vehicles in its class when it was new, the GLK continues to be popular on the used market. The interior is luxurious with plenty of wood and leather. Seating is comfortable as you would expect in a Mercedes-Benz. There is an abundance of technology that can be challenging for the less technologically savvy. Like most vehicles in this class, interior room and cargo capacity are not abundant. However, the cargo floor is low and makes for easy loading and unloading. When equipped with the 3.5 litre V6, the performance is strong and the fuel economy reasonable. This baby Benz SUV is a retained value winner for 2018.

2018 Best Retained Value - Mid-size Luxury Crossover/SUV

Porsche Cayenne*

Many Porsche purists sputtered when the Cayenne first hit the streets as a 2003 model. It was heresy in their eyes, but for buyers it was a Porsche that they could use day-to-day. Times have changed and the Cayenne has become one of the finest SUVs available. For an SUV it is remarkably well composed on road, handling better than many cars, some that have a sporting pretense. Add a twin-turbo V8 to the mix and you end up with an SUV that will leave some other sports cars embarrassed in a stop light drag-race. All in all, it is an SUV that buyers desire and so it is back in 2018 for another Retained Value Award.

2018 Best Retained Value - Full-size Luxury Crossover/SUV

Mercedes-Benz G-Class*

If practical and sensible are at the top of your shopping list, then the G-Class is unlikely to fit the bill. G-Class is an emotional purchase that fills the “I want” versus the “I need” ledger. Unlike the rest of the Mercedes-Benz line up, luxury, refinement, comfort and handling do not describe the G-Class. Built originally as a military vehicle capable of blazing trails, the suspension and underpinnings are utilitarian not technologically advanced. It is a large vehicle that feels even larger because of its less than modern driving dynamics. But at the end of the day, none of this matters. The G-Class makes a statement in its unique styling and exclusivity. For those who can afford it, the G-Class stands apart from other luxury SUVs and attracts attention which keeps demand and values high.

2018 Best Retained Value - Minivan

Toyota Sienna*

The Toyota Sienna joined many other Toyota’s as a winner of the Canadian Black Book 2018 Best Retained Value Award in the minivan segment. Families continue to appreciate Sienna’s smooth and refined ride, versatility and reliability. The available AWD adds to the feeling of security when road conditions are not at their best. As expected in a minivan, the interior is roomy and comfortable. Fuel efficiency from the standard V6 is good without sacrificing performance. There are a number of trim levels to choose from that run from sporty to full-on luxury, so finding a model to meet your family needs shouldn’t be a problem. While the minivan segment continues to decline, it is still a favorite for many families who want to maximize space and versatility.

2018 Best Retained Value - Small Pick-up

Toyota Tacoma*

The Tacoma is a perennial Best Retained Value award winner, nine times now, in this segment. There is a reason for that – buyers love them. Speak to anyone who has one and they are generally gushing with pride from owning one. Try and find a used one for sale and you’ll often be left wanting. The lore is, they are indestructible, well it is still a piece of equipment and as such you can break it but, you’ll likely have to do something extreme to do so. Adding to its durability, the cargo box is composite, rather than steel so even it doesn’t suffer the usual scrapes and dents which befall pickups often something that diminishes a truck’s value. With all types of configurations and engines there a size for most small truck buyers. It is also one of very few trucks on the market to offer a fuel efficient four-cylinder. While you can’t really consider a vehicle “investment grade” but if there was a truck to pin the expression to, it might be the Tacoma.

With plenty of box and cab length configurations, a powerful V8 and equipment levels from work-truck basic to the all-out luxurious Platinum there is a Tundra for most tastes and needs. Add in the typical Toyota reputation for durability and reliability and you have a recipe for an award winner.
